Press Release - Financial Literacy Film Festival - Smoke & Mirrors short film screening April 2021

Fresno, CA
Release: March 25th, 2021

Award-winning short film “Smoke & Mirrors” tells a story about gambles made and friendships lost.

For Immediate Release

The Writer-Director Jonathan Burnett's short film, "Smoke & Mirrors," will take to the screen again in Fresno at the Financial Literacy Film Festival in April.

Actors Tommy Redmond Hicks
(She's Gotta Have It, 1986) and Charles Bracy (Killer of Sheep, 1978) are the movie's leading actors.

"Two old friends buy into a worm farming scheme and con others to achieve their aspirations.

But when they were duped out of their money, the two friends turn on each other and must regain what's important their friendship."  The movie "Smoke & Mirrors" is a buddy drama that has humor but shows the reality of how ordinary people struggle all while chasing the almighty dollar.

It's also a look at how people must protect old long-lasting friendships.

Burnett's inspiration for writing the script came from his own father's story about falling prey to a worm farming scheme. "The idea of the script came from an experience my father and his best friend had back in the late 70's" Burnett recalls.

"He and his best friend saw an older gentleman with a nice car, suit, and watch. They asked what he did, and the gentleman introduced them to the world of worm farming. They almost fell for it but at the last second declined."

The Financial Literacy Film Festival will be the ninth festival for "Smoke & Mirrors." "I'm honored to be in this festival because for a very long time I believed that financial literacy should be taught and made available to all.", says Burnett.

The festival will be online each Friday evening at 630PM PST, from April 2nd to April 23rd.
